Bayern – Atletico: Starting the main battle

Building a lasting empire in the Champions League is the goal of Bayern Munich. And even in high form, it is not easy – it is typically going to meet Atletico Madrid.

“We want to win the maximum number of titles like last season,” coach Hansi Flick confirmed before his opening match in the European arena, meeting Atletico. Since taking charge at the Alianz Arena, he has won every tournament with Bayern in them. Last season’s Champions League, Bayern became the first team in history to win on the way to conquer the silver cup.

The German coach has reason to be confident. From the beginning of the season, Bayern still showed a destructive form. They won seven out of eight games, including matches hitting four or even eight against their opponents. The only defeat against Hoffenheim came in less than 48 hours after Bayern experienced a tough match with Sevilla in the European Super Cup. This can be seen as an accident.

This season, Bayern still maintain the factors that made the treble last season. Although he said goodbye to Thiago Alcantara, coach Flick was not too worried when he determined the midfield entrustment for the duo Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. Defense is a place to maintain stability with names that played well last season, under the direction of Manuel Neuer. More importantly, Bayern still keeps its gameplay rich in speed, pressing and pressing the opponent.

Bayern also owns a quality bench and has substitutions worthy of the main soccer players. In general, it is not easy to find weaknesses in the current team of the Alianz Arena home team.

With the above power, Bayern can completely defend the Champions League title like Real Madrid did in 2017, and become the second club in Europe to do this. Further, “Gray Lobster” can aim to build a lasting empire like what Real of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo did. Three consecutive Champions League titles from 2016 to 2018 were Real’s dazzling milestones in the European arena, a great challenge for any team.

Bayern, in fact, also had certain similarities with Real then. They have a talented goalkeeper in a wooden frame, a solid defense, a midfield that can impose the opponent and especially a powerful attacking trio. Real’s peak period was associated with the BBC trio of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bayern also owned Leroy Sane, Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry.

However, Bayern will face many difficulties in the opening match. Their opponent is Atletico, the team is always on the wrong foot in the European arena. Last season, Diego Simeone’s team eliminated defending champions Liverpool with an active defensive play and making good use of the few opportunities. This way of Atletico is like being born to face teams that like to push the opponent and push the team up as high as Bayern.

Since the beginning of the season, Atletico played four games and conceded only one goal. The defense, as usual, remains the backbone of the team and is a challenge for all attackers. Destroying the defense system of Atletico, so it is not a simple card for Hansi Flick and his students. Especially when the attacking trio of Bayern currently only Lewandowski is ready to play, because Sane is injured and Gnabry is positive for Covid-19. But Bayern is Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman or Douglas Costa.

A victory over Atletico will partly confirm Bayern’s ambitions to create an empire in Europe.
